PREPARATION

Before starting, you ensure your hands and nails are well cleaned. File your nails if necessary, so that there are no snags. By doing this you prevent damages on the face and risk of infection.

Always work using clean materials (sponges, brushes, spatulas, water bowls) and change the water regularly.

Get the subject to put on any clothes beforehand that have to be put on over the head. Protect your models clothing with a hairdressing cape or a towel.

First degrease and clean the skin you are going to be working on with Grimas Cleansing Lotion. Then dry the skin with a tissue.

With a dry or sensitive skin, you can apply Grimas Under Make-up Base. Allow 10 minutes for it to be absorbed before you continue.

Pre-colour the face with white Cake Make-up and some Water Make-up (Pure) basic colour, if necessary. Make the teeth white.

Place the latex application on the skin to get an impression of whether the edges are a good fit and where it is going to be glued on. First apply the chin and then the snout.

Apply Transparent Powder to where the edge merges into the skin to mark out the exact spot.

Pack some cotton wool into the nose. This absorbs the perspiration. When the model keeps her mouth firmly closed, the parts should fit together well.

Apply a little Grimas Mastix Extra to the inside of the scales/adhesive edge and allow it to dry for a few seconds. Do the following to get the correct degree of adhesion: press the latex prostetic lightly in place and then remove it again straight away. Wait a few seconds and reposition the application, pressing the edges in place with a tissue.
Protect the eyes by closing them and covering them with a tissue. Can cause serious damage to the eyes.

To get a smooth transition between the latex prostetic and the skin, even the edges off as follows: apply a thin line of eyelash adhesive to the edge of a sponge and dab this over the transition between the latex prostetic and the skin. Allow to dry with help of a hairdryer until the result is transparent. Repeat this process until a nice and even transition is obtained.

LATEX PROSTHETICS = Latex prostetics
Apply a base with Grimas Cake Make-up.
Advice: when you apply a Cake base with two colours, first apply the area of light colour and then the area of dark colour.

You apply Cake Make-up with a slightly damp make-up sponge. If you work with too much moisture, streaks will form. You can press the make-up sponge down onto a tissue to remove any excess moisture. Take the make-up sponge between the fingertips and squeeze it together to create a round surface. With this surface the make-up can be applied. First dab a little Cake Make-up onto the hand to check the colour intensity. Cake Make-up dries quickly, so you need to work quickly to achieve a nice result.

MAKE-UP SPONGE = Make-up Sponge
Apply the light colour around the eyes and the dark colour for the rest, including neck and earlobes.

If the result is not even, turn the sponge that you worked with over and use the clean side to even out the make-up. Any stripes after drying can be gently rubbed away with a soft tissue or cloth.

WATER MAKE-UP

Use Water Make-up (Pure) to draw the nose and the lines of the gorilla face.

Water Make-up works just like watercolour paint. Use the brush and a little water to soften the make-up and make it a bit pasty. Test the colour intensity on the hand. Don't work too dry, but do not use too much water. Water Make-up (Pure) dries within 15 seconds.
If you do not want the colours to mix, be sure to wait for the first layer to dry before you work over it.

Hint: Regularly change the water you rinse your brushes in and preferably work with two water bowls: one for light and one for dark shades.

The shape, width and quality of the brush are to a great extent qualifying the effect you can achieve with it. For instance, round brushes are ideal for making curves and drawing curls. You draw straight lines preferably with a flat brush, keeping the handle of the brush pointed in the direction of the line. To draw a thin line, you do not necessarily need to use a narrow brush. You can also use the edge of a flat brush for that. This brush is also very convenient for making a thick line merge into a thin one, turning the brush on its side in one fluid action as you go automatically changes the line from thick to thinner. When you come to the end of a line, lift the brush from the skin in a single smooth movement.
Hint: to make beautiful, thin lines, you mix the Water Make-up with Cleansing Lotion instead of water.

Whatever the make-up objective, the techniques for lightening/shadowing are the basis of the effects you want to achieve. Shaded/dark segments cause that area to recede optically, whereas highlighted/lighter segments make something stand out optically. With rounded shapes you suggest a round face. The gorilla has a strongly accentuated frown line; this gives a menacing effect.

Hiding the hair
Along the hair line and the jawline you attach Wool Crepe beards in various colours.

FINISHING

Make 6 beards using each of the six colours of Wool Crepe.
For every 6 pieces of beard:

Pulling Wool Crepe loose

Grimas Wolcrêpe is used to create beards, moustaches and eyebrows or to camouflage the edges of a beard set. It is a series of pieces of sheep's wool (approximately 15 cm in length) braided together.

You make the Wool Crepe beard as follows:
Pull a braid of about 50 cm wool crepe loose from the strings around which it has been wound.

WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
If you feel resistance, you cut the strings loose so that you can continue.
Pull the start of the straight-edge cut piece loose, so that its end becomes fluffy.

Straightening
Straighten the part you are working with, using a curler, styling tongs or an iron (on the 'wool' setting), until it has a slight wave.
Straighten the part you are working with, using a curler, styling tongs or an iron (on the 'wool' setting), until it has a slight wave. Do not pull it too hard, so the braid remains intact.
Pull gently to the right length
Now make the piece that you are working with longer and looser: run it through your hands and pull it gently bit by bit in the lengthwise direction, but so that the piece still remains intact.
Creating tufts

Pull the loosened string into three equal pieces. Do the following with each of the pieces: pull the piece loose in the middle, in the lengthwise direction with the hairs; then place the two pieces on top of each other and divide them into two again.

Keep the hands about 20 cm apart. Keep repeating this action until the Wool Crepe is transparent.
WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
Hold the Wool Crepe against the light to see if there are any dark patches.
WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
Keep repeating this action until the Wool Crepe is transparent. The pieces get increasingly shorter and thicker.
WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
The pieces get increasingly shorter and thicker.
As soon as the result is transparent, you pull the tuft into a length of 20 to 25 cm again and you spray it with a hairspray with a strong hold to strengthen it. You can also use plastic spray. Note: using hairspray or plastic spray on the Wool Crepe will make it inflammable.

Hint: you can vary the thickness of the pieces slightly.

WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
Snip the tufts gently diagonally across.
Now you have six pieces in each colour, giving a total of twelve pieces.
Stick the pieces of Wool Crepe around the face against each other. Work preferably work on a dry base. Work piece by piece.
Apply glue to the part of the skin concerned and press the cut surface/obliquely cut side into the adhesive.
WOLCRÊPE = Wool Crepe
Along the hair line and the jawline you attach Wool Crepe beards in various colours. Press the adhesive edge onto the skin with one hand, and model the Wool Crepe pieces together with the other hand. Model the beards on top of the head carefully into the hair using the end of a pin-tail comb. Please note: do not comb! Fix the result with a hairspray.

REMOVING THE PRODUCTS

You remove the Wool Crepe with Mastix Remover. You can then already pull some of the hairs loose and remove them with a tissue. The remaining hairs and the adhesive you remove with a cotton wool pad and Mastix Remover. Dab it carefully onto the skin and roll the residual material off the skin.

Removing the latex application Detach the adhesive edge with a cotton bud soaked in Grimas Mastix Remover. The adhesive and make-up residues of the Nose or Set are to be removed with Mastix Remover.

Massage Grimas Multi Remover Pure or Cleansing Cream into the skin and remove with a tissue. Cleanse the skin afterwards with Grimas Cleansing Lotion.

If Water Make-up gets onto clothing, rinse it out under a tap. Leave the item of clothing to soak in water containing a pre-wash (Biotex). Then wash it by hand or put it in the washing machine.
CLEARING UP THE MATERIALS

If necessary, rinse the Water Make-up clean and wipe the surfaces of the colours dry with clean tissues. Let the make-up dry out in the air and only put the lid back on when the Water Make-up is dry. Store it in a dry and cool place until the next time you use it. Store the make-up in a dry and cool place until the next time you use it.

The sponges are disposable so you can throw them away after use. If you do want to reuse them, first rinse them under the tap with some soap or shampoo or wash them in the washing machine (in a net bag or pillow case), set to at least 60°C.

You can clean brushes with water and soap or shampoo. Put the moist hairs of the brushes back into shape by hand after washing. Dry the brushes lying flat on a towel and do not place them upright, since that causes the moisture to run down into the shaft.

Clean the latex prostetic afterwards using water and soap, and powder it with Grimas Transparent Powder after drying (with a dryer, if necessary). Keep in a dark place.
